Measuring Waist Circumference When Losing Weight on the Dukan Diet

French nutritionist Pierre Ducan's diet is perhaps one of the most popular in the world.The Pierre Dukan Diet was invented in the late 1990s and immediately won the love and trust of hundreds of thousands of followers around the world.The essence of the Dukan diet is simple: as few carbohydrates as possible, as much protein as possible.The authors of the Dukan Diet used the diet of primitive hunter-gatherers as a guide.Dukan believes that our bodies, especially their needs for essential nutrients, have changed little since the days when the main food sources were herbs and roots gathered by women and animal meats obtained by men.But sugar, white flour, and other products that form the basis of our modern diet were unfamiliar to our primitive ancestors.Now, when we switch to our usual eating habits, we gain weight and then get sick.Pierre Dukan's diet is designed to be as close to a "natural" diet as possible, forcing the body to remember those times when muscles were strong and fat layers were weak.

The beginning of the Dukan diet

The Dukan Diet is divided into four phases.Two of them are designed for weight loss, and the other two are designed to prevent the so-called "yo-yo effect," where weight lost through dieting comes back on.Furthermore, it is assumed that in the middle between the two stages, the weight should stabilize.Where to start with the Dukan Diet?The easiest way is to start with phase one, which takes two to seven days.

Despite its short duration, the first phase of the Dukan diet, the so-called "attack", is very effective: after this, on average, up to 4 kilograms of excess weight can be lost.

This is followed by the second phase, the alternating phase, which is longer and designed to stabilize weight loss.If all goes well, you'll lose approximately one kilogram per week during phase two of the Dukan diet.The duration of this phase is calculated individually and depends on how much excess weight a person wants to lose using the Dukan Diet.

The third phase of the Dukan Diet is designed to consolidate the gains that have been made.Its duration can be calculated using a simple formula: for every kilogram lost, 10 days of diet are required.Assuming a loss of 10 kilograms, the third phase will last for 100 days.

After completing Phase Three, the final phase of the Dukan Diet begins, Phase Four, which lasts a lifetime.But fear not: In phase four of the diet, you only need to return to a strict group of foods one day a week.The rest of the time, just eat oat bran every day, drink enough water, and walk for at least 20 minutes a day.

According to Pierre Dukan, due to the "reprogramming" that occurs with the help of attacks, the body learns to use proteins instead of carbohydrates as a basis for energy.Furthermore, during the course of the various stages of the Dukan Diet, a person reaches an optimal weight and body shape - a personal standard that best suits his lifestyle, height, age and other parameters.

Stages of the Dukan Diet

Therefore, the first phase of the Dukan Diet - Attack - allows you to see the first results of the diet within a few days of starting.During an attack, it is important to eat 1.5 tablespoons of oatmeal a day, walk for at least half an hour a day and make sure to drink 1.5 - 2 liters of water.As for the foods that can be eaten in the first phase of the Dukan Diet, the basics are protein foods.Protein foods that are low in fat and carbohydrates can be eaten in almost unlimited quantities.In addition, during the first phase of the Dukan diet, it is allowed to eat foods that contain no protein, but also almost no carbohydrates and fats - first of all, of course, these are various drinks.In the first phase of the Dukan diet, 72 high-protein foods are allowed: Such a rich variety of foods can make eating comfortable for almost anyone, even those who do not tolerate dietary restrictions well.

The second phase of the Pierre Dukan diet, "Alternation," should stabilize the results achieved.At this stage, vegetables are added to protein products (except for products containing starch - for example potatoes, corn).Vegetables and high-protein foods can still be eaten almost unlimitedly, mainly by following the principle of alternation: only eat protein foods one day, and eat protein and vegetables the next day.It is still necessary to eat oatmeal every day - at this stage it is already two tablespoons a day.In general, oatmeal is one of the main products in Dukan's diet.Oat bran is rich in protein, which helps keep you full, is good for heart function, and stimulates intestinal motility.

During the second phase of the diet, it is also important to drink up to two liters of clean water per day and spend at least half an hour a day in physical activity.

In the third phase of the diet, you can eat unlimited amounts of protein and vegetables, and you can also add some fruits and dairy products.Here are the basic rules for Phase 3 of the Dukan Diet:

  • You can eat fruits, except bananas, grapes, cherries, dried fruits and nuts;
  • You can eat two slices of rye bread and 40 grams of hard cheese every day;
  • Twice a week you can have pasta with tomato sauce, 225g of couscous, wheat or millet, lentils, beans and potatoes (all without oil);
  • You can include lamb, pork, and bacon in your diet several times a week.

We remind you that the duration of this phase of the Dukan diet depends on how much excess weight a person loses during the process: every kilogram lost is "worth" 10 days of diet.

The fourth phase of the Dukan Diet involves returning to your usual type of diet, but those who do not want to lose the gains they have made should follow certain rules.Here are the rules for Phase 4 of the Dukan Diet:

  • Eat only protein foods one day a week.
  • Drink at least two liters of water every day.
  • Walk for at least 20 minutes every day.
  • Eat three tablespoons of oat bran daily.

How to Calculate Weight on the Dukan Diet

To calculate weight on the Dukan diet, you can use a simple formula: to lose the first 5 kg, you need 2 days of attack, 15 days of alternation and 50 days of consolidation.Each subsequent 5 kg increase adds 1 day of attack, 35 days of alternation and another 50 days of consolidation.Of course, these weight calculation recommendations are approximate and depend on the individual characteristics of the body.
